About the Author
Till Muellenmeister born in 1981 in Cologne, Germany. After briefly studying political science and economics, he went on to study photography and media focusing on photojournalism at the University of Applied Science in Bielefeld. He graduated in 2010. He received a scholarship by the organization InWEnt (Intenational Capacity Building International, Germany, former GTZ ) for an internship in East Africa. The six-month internship for Swiss and Kenyan dailies “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” and “Daily Nation” in Nairobi, Kenya resulted in him covering the 2007/2008 election and the unrest that followed. He has worked as a freelancer since, working for newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times, The Times, Washington Post, Le Figaro, Le Monde, Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, taz, Handelsblatt, Der Spiegel and Aljazzera English Magazin. Other photography-related work included international co-operations and freelance work for UNHCR, UNICEF, IRIN -OCHA , SOS Children´s Villages, GTZ – Gemeinschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit, Care International, Agence France Presse, Aljazzera. He has travelled to numerous European and African countries producing photojournalistic reports on political and social conflicts as well as cultural and ethnic diversity for German and international magazines. In 2010 he became a member of the photography agency “laif Photos & Reportagen” and was nominated for the Black and White Spider Award. In 2011 he won the VG Bild Sponsorship Award and received the grant for documentary photography from the Wüstenrot Foundation. The grants for documentary photography are awarded every two years by the Wüstenrot Foundation in cooperation with the Photography Collection of the Museum Folkwang in Essen and are accompanied by a traveling exhibition and a catalog which is currently hosted in the “Kunstverein Ludwigshafen”. He is based as a freelance photojournalist and documentary film maker in Nairobi, Kenya and Rwanda, Kigali.
